Over the past few years, the French clarinettist has naturally established himself as one of the most remarkable soloists of his generation. Carving a unique path in today's musical landscape, this "concert artist armed for any challenge" (Diapason) demonstrates a mastery and versatility that transcends eras and styles, navigating with ease through all repertoires, on both historical and modern instruments.
Winning prestigious international competitions — including the ARD International Music Competition in Munich, the Dos Hermanas Competition in Seville, and the ICA Young Artist Competition in the United States — opened doors for Nicolas to the world’s most renowned venues, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Philharmonie de Paris, Salzburg Mozarteum, Bunkamura Orchard Hall in Tokyo, and the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory.
As a soloist, he is invited to perform with distinguished orchestras, such as the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre National de France, Czech Philharmonic, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Mannheim National Theatre Orchestra, and the Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra.
Early in his career, he had the privilege of working with legendary conductors such as Carlo Maria Giulini, Claudio Abbado, Bernard Haitink, and Kurt Masur. Today, he collaborates with leading conductors including Myung-Whun Chung, Alain Altinoglu, Pablo Heras-Casado, Mikko Franck, and Fabien Gabel.
His transformative encounters with Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Sir Roger Norrington sparked a deep interest in period instruments and historically informed performance practice, leading to recent solo appearances on historical instruments with Les Musiciens du Louvre (Marc Minkowski) and Le Concert de la Loge (Julien Chauvin).
Nicolas’ recent appearances featured his debut with the Yomiuri Symphony Orchestra, chamber recitals in South Korea with Yeol Eum Son and Sunghyun Cho, as well as performances at the Wigmore Hall, Wiener Konzerthaus, Muziekgebouw, Banff Centre in Canada, the Crusell Music Festival in Finland, and Festival La Roque d'Anthéron.
In Paris, he appeared across its premier venues, presenting chamber music programs at Salle Gaveau, Salle Cortot, and the Grande Salle Pierre Boulez at the Philharmonie de Paris, performing Mozart's Clarinet Concerto at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, and giving the premiere of Finnish composer Sauli Zinovjev’s Clarinet Concerto with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France under François Leleux in the Auditorium de la Maison de la Radio.
His 2026/27 season is marked by further prestigious debuts alongside welcome return engagements: Nicolas makes his debut with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra under Marin Alsop, performs at the National Forum of Music in Wrocław with the Wrocław Baroque Orchestra under renowned conductor Giovanni Antonini, returns to the Festival de Colmar for his debut with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice, joins the prestigious Amici della Musica di Firenze series with the Chiaroscuro Quartet, and returns to the Hindsgavl Festival in Denmark alongside Maxim Emelyanychev and Ivan Podyomov.
His wide-ranging discography covers all aspects of the clarinet repertoire, earning major critical acclaim, including the Diapason d’Or and 5 stars from Classica.
Under an exclusive five-year contract with Alpha Classics to record Mozart's complete works for clarinet on historical instruments, the first two volumes of this landmark project have already been met with widespread critical acclaim, receiving Le Choix de France Musique, 5 stars from Diapason, and glowing reviews in Gramophone and The Guardian.
Nicolas Baldeyrou graduated from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse (CNSMD) de Paris. He has held the clarinet chair at the CNSMD in Lyon since 2007, while also teaching at the Versailles Conservatoire and the Chapelle Musicale Reine Élisabeth in Belgium.
Beyond his performing and teaching career, he plays a key role in instrument innovation, collaborating for over two decades with Buffet Crampon on research and development, and representing Vandoren as an international artist.
